Notes	CIVIL WAR SERVICE RECORDS VMI Record: Entered VMI- July 30, 1856 as a 3rd Classman; Graduated July 4, 1859 standing 18 in a class of 29. Enlisted on 7/26/1861 at West Point, VA as a 1st Lieutenant. On 7/26/1861 he was commissioned into "H" Co. VA 53rd Infantry. He was discharged on 5/5/1862 Failed reelection) On 5/12/1862 he was commissioned into VA Corps Of Engineers (date and method of discharge not given) (May have served) He was listed as: Detailed 12/15/1861 Fort Grafton, VA (In charge of working party) Detached 4/17/1862 Engineer Department Wounded 5/15/1864 New Market, VA (While commanding Co C. Cadet Battn) He also had service in: "C" Co. VA Cadet Battn Elected 1st Lt. of Co. H. of the 53rd Va. Regt. July 20, 1861; On detached service with Engineers on the Peninsula much of 1861-62; Applied for assignment to Engineers April 1862, but was not re-elected (According to Hill, he declined re-election, but according to another officer he was thrown out of the Corps of Engineers in May 1862. No official records indicate which account was correct) Employed at VMI 1862-64 as Lt. (1862-63) and Captain, Assistant Instructor of French & Tactics; Commanded Co. C. of the Corps of Cadets during the Battle to New Market May 15, 1864 and was seriously wounded in the head during that Battle.
