      NEWPORT NEWS - Andrea Lane Tate, 95, departed peacefully on Aug. 24, 2006, at Hampton Roads Specialty Hospital in Newport News, Va. Mrs. Tate was born in Barton, N.D., on Jan. 20, 1911. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andy and Alice Lane, and two sisters, Claudine Peery and Audriene Ervin.

      Mrs. Tate is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Smith of Hampton, Va., and Barbara Tate of Newport News, Va., and one sister, Shirley Thomas of Durham, N.C. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Lewis Smith (Susan), Mark Smith (Holly), Andrea Sealey (Shannon) and Jennifer Stuart (Vernon), nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

      Mrs. Tate lived most of her life in Bluefield, Va., where she retired from teaching after 28 years of service. She moved to Newport News, Va., in 1980 where she resided until her death. Mrs. Tate was a very active member of Hilton Christian Church serving as an elder, Sunday school teacher, choir member and circle leader. Mrs. Tate has donated her body to Eastern Virginia Medical School.

      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Hilton Christian Church in Newport News, Va., after which the family will receive friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hilton Christian Church, 100 James River Drive, Newport News, VA 23601, or a favorite charity.
