    Notes
    • From the Compilation of Genealogy Records of Robert Hood Tate by Billie Bailey, January 2001

Alfred Shankle, private, Company B, 2nd Battalion (formerly Company C, 5th Battalion) Tennessee, confederate State Army, enlisted October 10, 1861 in the Civil War. He drew a pension (#14954 I) in Gustine, Comanche County, TX in 1909.

From Alfred Newberry Shankle's pension application filed July 24, 1909 and approved August 31, 1909 in Gustine, Comanche County, TX, Alfred stated: "I enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate service, but during said war I was loyal and true to my duty, and never at any time voluntarily abandoned my post of duty in the said service; that I was honorably discharged at Flat Gap, TN in 1864 on account of ill health and that I am 62 years old, was born in Dekalb County, AL and have resided in Texas since 1871 in the county of Comanche."

Alfred's brother-in-law, Aaron A. Tate aged 61 years of Hamilton County, TX, testified on the application for Alfred's Confederate Pension stating: "I have known him all of my life. I was at his home when he came home on a furlough with a spell of fever, and knew that he was from the army of the Confederacy located in Georgia, as well as I remember at this time, and heard him speak of the service in the said army. I lived in the same community about ten or twelve miles apart and associated together frequently. I did not know of any other soldier in the service by that name. I am certain that the said applicant is the person I have testified about in the foregoing answers. I have answered in the foregoing that I lived near the applicant and personally know him and saw him while at home, and my knowledge of the same is not based on conjecture. I know he stayed in the service until the surrender. I do not know what company, I don't recollect. He went in about the 3rd year of the war and stayed a long time, about the last two years of the war. He is not able to do a days work. He is too old and feeble. He has lived in Texas since the year 1870 and has continuously lived here.

Myra Ann (Shankle) Tate, Alfred's sister and the wife of Aaron A. Tate, testified on the application stating: "I have known the applicant about 50 years. I knew him in Dekalb County, Al. Knew him about all my life. I know that the applicant enlisted in the service of the Confederacy about three years after the war began and served until it closed, and performed the service of a soldier. I do not know that company he enlisted or served in. He enlisted sometime in 1864 in the Western Army, about two years. He is not able to support himself by labor. I am the sister of the applicant and was at home at the time and place designated above and actually knew that he left home and joined the army and returned to the army and remained there until the close of the war. I am positively certain that the applicant is the identical person testified about. I have answered above. He was my brother and we lived together in the same family. He has lived here since 1870."

When Alfred died in 1916, his widow, Martha Jane drew his pension until her death in 1919.
