In 1858, in company with his brother, James came to Washington and spent the first winter on the Whitaker Place, where they were in the stock business with four others. The following summer, John and David Fudge also came to this state and the four brothers took claims in the same neighborhood located on Whiskey Creek.
In 1862, the brothers packed to the Florence Mines; in 1863 they moved their mother and their respective families from Oregon; in the following year engaged in freighting from Umatilla Landing and Walla Walla to Boise; in 1865 made two trips to Kostenia, British Columbia and one to Helena, Montana and then sold their pack outfits and in the following summer freighted with teams to Colveille and to the old Hudson's Bay Company's fort.
