OBITUARY
From Find A Grave
Mr. James Gibson Alexander Sr., 85, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
He was born Jan. 20, 1916, at Cherry Grove Farm in Fairfield and was a son of the late John Addison and Janet Ingles Fultz Alexander.
A lifetime farmer, he formed and developed the Cherry Grove Dairy Farm, which he, with the help of his two sons, continued to operate until his death. Before farming, he explored several types of off-farm work. He managed the trout hatchery in Marion, Va., and worked with DuPont in Waynesboro. Active in the church and community, he was a lifetime member of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon, elder and trustee. He was a member of Fairfield Ruritan Club, serving as president and in other offices, and was a member of the Masons, Mountain City Lodge No. 0067 in Lexington, Va., for more than 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Jeffress Alexander. Mr. Alexander is survived by his son, James G. Alexander Jr., and a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Jeffress and Jean Ann Alexander, all of Fairfield, Va.; two brothers, R. Tate Alexander of Fairfield and John A. Alexander Jr. of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Susie Jeffress McCormick of Raphine, Va.; four nephews; and three nieces.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in the Fairfield Cemetery, with the Rev. Jeannette Baggs officiating. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fairfield First-Aid Crew. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the residence. Arrangements by the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington, Va.
