      Louis Andrew Vipperman, age 72, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998 in the Baptist Hospital, Winston- Salem, N.C.

      Mr. Vipperman was born in Atkins, the son of the late Andrew Jackson and Eva Mary Schneider Vipperman. He attended the Mt. View Church of God in Saltville, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II, and was an honorary member of the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Dept.

      He is survived by his wife, Rachel Overbay Vipperman of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Eva Vipperman, Rural Retreat; two grandchildren, Mary Ann Vipperman of Rural Retreat, and Pvt. Jason Vipperman, U.S. Army, Ft. Sill, Okla.; four sisters, Luella Authenrieth, Rural Retreat, Ruby Cook and Myrtle Zellman, both of Bel Air, Md., and Virgie Whitley of Havre de Grace, Md.; one brother, Clarence William Vipperman, Dalzell, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Viola Overbay, Atkins; several nieces and nephews.

      Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Tilley, the Rev. Thomas Bunting, and the Rev. Bob Neese officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat with Marion VFW Post 4667 conducting graveside military rites. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Dept. or the Rural Retreat Emergency Services. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence any time.
