She was the fourth child of eleven, born to Martin Van Buren and Margaret Vining Tate. Her parents joined the Mormon Church and on April 12, 1895, left for UT. They settled in Spanish Fork, UT for three years.
In the fall of 1898, they set out for AZ with one covered wagon and a team of mules. They settled in Central, AZ and Nellie lived there until the age of 18. She was organist for two years for the Central Ward. After marrying Spence Coleman Heywood in 1905, they moved to Pima, AZ for one and one half years and then moved to Thatcher. She passed the county school examination for teaching. First School was at Robinson's Ranch, located 3 miles south of Thatcher, in the foothills near the base of Mt. Graham. Term was six months getting paid $65.00 monthly. She taught school nine months in all. She held a number of positions in the Church, second counselor in Young Ladies Organization, Theology Teacher in First Ward Relief Society in Mesa, AZ, filled a local Stake Mission in 1949 and 1950. She was the mother of eleven children.
