  Notes	Excerpt from the Tate Families of Southern States, Volume II, Laura Metzel and Ethel Speer Updike, 1984 Son of Elan H. and Jane Turner Tate. Elan did not remarry after Jane's death. John, George and Martha's graves are unmarked. George was murdered in Decaturville on December 1, 1876 by Grove Liles. (Goodspeed's History says November 30, 1877 and used here). The indications are that Martha had preceded him in death. Possibly at the birth of Mattie on February 3, 1876. The records of Grove Liles trial and conviction for George's murder were lost in the Decatur County courthouse fire of 1926 so more positive information is lost.
