Source: History of Wise Co. VA
Benjamin F. Tate received a common school education. After his marriage he farmed for several years. He came into public life after Wise County's industrial development commended, when he was employed by the Stonegate Coke and Coal Company as company policeman, in which capacity he served for a period of five years. About the year 1912, he moved to the town of Coeburn in Wise County and was soon afterwards elected Town Sergeant. He held the position for 18 years.

He was a prominent citizen of Wise County, VA in its early history, and held the office of Assessor in the Richmond Township of the county from 1872 to 1874. He lived to be 94 years of age and was very active up until the time of his death. He served as a Confederate Soldier all during the Civil War.
